About Sheffield, South Yorkshire

Get your bearings between the city centre, Sheffield’s neighbourhoods and the countryside on its western edge.

A city best explored in neighbourhoods

Sheffield’s character changes as you move around it. Around the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden, civic buildings, galleries and shopping streets sit close together. Walk north towards the River Don and Kelham Island and you find former industrial buildings beside newer homes, workshops, pubs and places to eat.

The city’s metalworking history is a useful thread to follow, but it is only part of the picture. Independent businesses, universities, music venues and a network of neighbourhood centres all shape everyday Sheffield. For a first visit, choose one compact area to explore rather than treating the whole city as a single high street.

Finding the right part of Sheffield

The Cathedral Quarter and Devonshire Quarter offer different city-centre starting points. Further out, Broomhill, Hillsborough, Nether Edge, Woodseats and Ecclesall each have their own shops and services. Ecclesfield, Crystal Peaks and Halfway are useful names to know when looking beyond the central streets.

Westwards, Low Bradfield and the surrounding countryside offer a change from the centre. The directory includes both neighbourhood businesses and services covering the wider Sheffield area, so look at the address when choosing somewhere nearby.

Getting around without a rushed itinerary

Sheffield’s hills make distances on a map deceptive. Check the walking route as well as the distance, and use current bus, tram and rail information when moving between neighbourhoods. Sheffield station is convenient for the centre, but a cross-city appointment may need a separate onward journey.

The tram is useful for linking parts of the city, while walking lets you explore the smaller streets between stops. Sheffield is hilly, so a route through the centre can feel quite different from a walk out towards its western neighbourhoods.

Use the directory to plan locally

Use the directory to find a nearby café, a specialist shop or someone to help with a job at home. Shops and services are grouped by area as well as category, making it easier to explore beyond the city-centre streets.
