Things to do in Sheffield, from the Winter Garden to Kelham Island

Plan a city-centre wander, a museum visit or time in Sheffield’s neighbourhoods without trying to fit everything into one day.

Start with the city-centre green space

The Peace Gardens and Winter Garden make an easy starting point for a relaxed visit. The Winter Garden’s glass structure shelters planting in the centre of the city, beside the Millennium Gallery. You can combine this part of Sheffield with a café stop or a look around the surrounding streets.

The glasshouse contains more than 2,500 plants from around the world, making it a welcome indoor pause between the Peace Gardens and the Millennium Gallery. It is an easy place to add a little greenery to a city-centre wander.

Follow the industrial story north

Kelham Island and neighbouring Neepsend are rewarding places to explore Sheffield’s working history. Former industrial buildings, the River Don and surviving workshops sit alongside cafés, pubs and independent businesses. The neighbourhood is a good choice for a walk with a meal at one end, provided you check the route and current opening arrangements.

Kelham Island Museum brings the industrial story indoors. Its River Don Engine was built in Sheffield in 1905 to drive an armour-plate rolling mill; the museum’s visitor information gives the current arrangements for seeing it and any demonstrations.

Make space for a performance or specialist museum

The theatres around Tudor Square offer an evening option after a day in the centre. The National Emergency Services Museum at West Bar is another distinctive choice, occupying a former emergency-services building and exploring the people and equipment behind those services.

A performance around Tudor Square pairs well with a meal in the centre. If you prefer another daytime stop, West Bar offers a different part of Sheffield’s story, away from the main shopping streets.

Leave the centre on a separate outing

Low Bradfield makes a countryside outing of its own, with village surroundings that contrast with Kelham Island and the central streets. Keep the city-centre museums and a western countryside visit as different options when deciding how to spend your day.
